Push to streamline Australia's name

A new campaign to streamline the name of Australia's government has been launched byTasmanian Liberal Senator GUY BARNETT.

Senator BARNETT wants the words Commonwealth and Federal dropped and for the nationalgovernment to be always called the Australian government in official documents.

He wrote to Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD with the proposal last month and raised it ata government meeting in Canberra yesterday.

Party sources say Mr HOWARD and other MPs supported the idea, but formal action isnot a priority.

Senator BARNETT says the Australian government would be an effective title overseas, where generic terms like commonwealth and federal can be found confusing.
