Mechanical Technology Inc., reported third quarter net earnings of $710,000, nearly a 90 percent increase from year-earlier earnings of $168,000.
The company, involved in high- technology research and development for the private and government sectors, reported 1986 third- quarter earnings were 20 cents per share, compared to 5 cents in the 1985 third quarter.
The increased earnings were chiefly due to belt-tightening measures and better control of overhead and inventory, the company said.
